SEWING TIPS
Layout, Cutting & Marking Tips - for Minky Smooth, Dot, Prints & Swirl
Treat like a napped fabric and place all patterns in one direction.
Swirl naps do not lay in any one direction, but treat like a nap and lay all pattern pieces in one direction.
Place fabric right sides together to prevent the pattern pieces from “creeping” while you pin. Place pins perpendicular to seam line, which also helps prevent “creeping.”
Mark with a water soluble pen, if neccesary.
Sewing - for Minky Smooth, Dot, Prints & Swirl
Use all purpose polyester sewing thread and a new stretch needle, size 90/14.
DO NOT IRON. Pressing Minky will flatten the nap and remove all raised dots permanently. Pressing is not necessary with Minky, smooth out any wrinkles with your hands.
DO NOT USE FUSIBLE INTERFACING. Interfacing is not necessary in most Minky garments. If additional body is needed in a collar or cuff, it should be compatible with Minky’s stretch. Interface with Minky fabric, or another fabric with equal stretch.
Use stretch lining for lined garments.
Place pins perpendicular to the seam every 3 to 5 inches, closer if the seam curves.
Use a 3½ length straight stitch and always pre-test stitching first!
3 or 4 thread serge seam finish or seaming acceptable Always pre-test serging first!
Serge single layers of Minky with the right side down, it feeds better.
Use a regular presser foot, walking foot or ¼” quilting foot if seam allowance is ¼”.
A walking foot is the best for thicker seams or top stitching (although many don't find this necessary).
Topstitch in the direction of the nap.
Buttonholes sew in nicely in Minky; support with a piece of sew-in interfacing.
Zippers also sew in nicely with the aid of “Wonder Tape,” a double-faced tape that allows you to stitch through without damage to your needle.
